Your personal security starts with a basic understanding. Security is a state of mind.
What is Situational Awareness?
Quite simply, it’s an attitude or a behavior that everyone should develop. Being situationally aware is key to being safe in many environments, from walking or jogging to hiking, camping, traveling, and attending public events, just to name a few.
We learn how to adapt a Situational Awareness attitude by breaking down the elements into three categories: perception, comprehension and projection.
In all scenarios, a clear picture – or perception – of the environment is key. You can’t do this if you are listening to music or looking at your phone. Once you have a good perception of the environment – where you are or where you are going, then your training will shift to comprehension – analyzing and understanding the situation. At this point you determine any possible threats and you start to map out what actions you need to take.
This final stage is the projection stage – you mentally run through the scenarios – continue your current action, continue in the same direction, take avoidance action, etc.
On a simplistic level, think of the process of crossing a busy street. That’s an example of when your Situational Awareness kicks in. Most of us do this every day but fail to apply situational awareness training when it comes to personal safety in many environments such as traveling, being on vacation, walking around a strange city, or encountering strangers in our own neighborhoods.
The coaches at Noblemen Security work with our clients to bring Situational Awareness front and center through customized scenario-based coaching and training sessions. Feeling confident and safe,..well, that’s a great feeling.
